Skin Treatments in the Summer

If you are above the Equator, SUMMER is here!
No time to mess around with skin treatments that will exfoliate the skin (microdermabrasion, salycilic acid, retinoic acid, etc.) - the skin will be much more sensitive to the UV rays from the sun.

Keep in mind that SKIN treatments are potentially dangerous with the SUN EXPOSURE.

The rule is to have such formulas (acne, wrinkles, etc.) any season that the sun rays are not as intense, to minimize the harmful effects on the sensitive skin. In case you are still under treatment, make sure to have extra SUN protection.

Apply SUNSCREEN and a good MOISTURIZER often to prevent burns, wrinkles and spots.

Enjoy the sun, be good and be healthy!

Elbows and Knees - Not Forgotten

Elbows and knees are not the center of our attention and because we don't really have time to get to those details, they are often neglected. As we age, the skin of these areas get hard and darker.

A simple, natural homemade recipe to give a nice treatment to your ELBOWS and KNEES is to make a little paste made with sugar, lemon juice, olive oil and rub it on. It helps to slightly exfoliate, bleach and add some oil - wash it afterwards. You can instantly reveal a lighter and smoother skin.

Important to note - because is has lemon juice, avoid sun exposure! =)

Apply a good moisturizer and sunscreen during the day, as you would do for other parts of your body. The Açaí Body Moisturizer would be perfect for it - to be launched by July 1st -- keep that in mind.

Be good and be healthy!

Sunburns - Managing the Pain

Use sunscreen at all times during the day, especially if exposed to the sun to prevent sunburns. Even with care, it's possible that it happens.

SUNBURNS are red, painful, and sometimes develop blisters on the skin. There are different degrees, depending on how deep it affects the skin.

Here is a good tip to manage the superficial ones: Use a strong CHAMOMILE tea as a NATURAL anti-inflammatory. Heat a little water, add the flowers/tea content to water. Allow the hot water to extract the active ingredients - Brew the tea, COOL it down, pour it into a spray bottle and SPRITZ on your skin to SOOTH it. It feels so good!

Keep the tea refrigerated for a day only - remember that it might get bad, like any food.

Use sunscreen and - if a more serious sunburn occurs - seek for professional help.
Be good and be healthy!

Time for Sunscreen

*SUNSCREEN* contains ingredients that will prevent harmful SUN RAYS to reach the SKIN structures -- it's essential to REAPPLY it every 20 Min to make sure your skin is always PROTECTED.

There are many different substances that act as a sunscreen. There are also different categories that work as sunscreens - PHYSICAL filters will work reflecting the sun rays and CHEMICAL filters react with the sun rays to prevent it to reach the skin structures.

Sun rays are important for many natural biochemical reactions, important to the skin and bones, as an example -- but the excess might cause burns, photoaging and more serious damage to healthy skin structures.

Drink lots of WATER and ENJOY the sun.

Be good and be healthy!

Antioxidants in Nature

Have you heard about açaí [asa'i] - nature's highest antioxidant fruit found in the Brazilian rain forest. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals preventing premature aging and other conditions.
Acai is one of the world’s most nutritious, powerful fruits - it comes from an Amazon palm tree. Beneath its purple pigment is a berry packed with antioxidants, amino acids, and essential fatty acids - with one of the highest antioxidant levels found in nature, açaí was named one of nature’s 10 superfoods.

Researchers are investigating its actives to be use against conditions, such as cancer.

The pulp is served in Brazil as a frozen smoothie with banana and granola, I always thought it tastes like eating earth with banana -- but became addicted to it just because it's great to your health -- I really like the version sold at JambaJuice... mixed with other fruits - it's good for you and super yammy!

Be good and be healthy!

Spring time Hair

Chlorine from the swimming pool, sun exposure and dying products will have a damaging effect on the hair. Once damaged the last thing to do is to cut the damaged portion.

To prevent damage from chlorine, you can use a product with silicone and a swimming cap before going to the water. Wash the hair thoroughly with a good shampoo and conditioner afterwards. There are shampoos specific for swimmers in the market.

Preventing the damage is possible, with the use of the correct product and avoiding excessive heat and sun exposure.

It will help if you use a hat, and a routine with a good shampoo & conditioner specific for your hair type.

Be good and be healthy.

Spring Time

The increase of the temperature and light on the northern hemisphere causes the new plant growth to "spring forth", giving the season its name.

The first day of spring this year (2008) is March 20 - more precisely at 5:48 GMT. Most flowering plants bloom this time of year, in a long succession and continuing into early summer.

In general, the four seasons correspond to the relative position of the Sun to the earth. The determination of the Spring season is calculated when the Sun passes through the equatorial plane.

When going from Winter to Spring, the Sun is moving North, and as soon as the Sun crosses the equator, we call it Spring.

Bossa Nova - 50 years of Bossa

Bossa Nova is the Brazilian music style that was born in Rio de Janeiro, out of the melodies by Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes.
In 1969, Gilberto's new musical style reached a worldwide audience with the release of "Girl from Ipanema," one of the greatest hits of bossa nova. Different from samba, a popular music style in Brazil, bossa nova is more upscale and often speaks of love, the beach and beautiful women. It is worldwide spread and it's common to be heard in hip lounges and bars throughout the world.

The expression Bossa Nova does not really have a translation - Nova means new and Bossa means trend - but to do something with Bossa is to do it with a special flair... It is definitely an easy going and elegant music style that works really well with a romantic setting... Love is in the air...

Be good and be healthy.

Contact Dermatitis - an unpleasant itch...

Contact dermatitis is an irritation of the skin caused by contact with a substance that causes the reaction. It results in a localized skin burning and itchy rashes that can take up to weeks to heal.

Facts:

  • Superficial regions of the skin are affected

  • Inflammation of the affected tissue is present in the 2 superficial skin layers

  • It takes days to fade away

  • It fades only if the skin no longer comes in contact with the allergen or irritant.

  • It is essential that the agent that caused the contact dermatitis is removed – even when the agent removal, a chronic contact dermatitis can still develop.

The causes of irritants related to contact dermatitis are various and so it’s their mechanism of action.

Example of triggers: poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac, highly alkaline substances (such as lye and other hair straighteners), detergents/concentrated soaps, cleaning products, rubbers
organic solvents (acetone, alcohol, etc).

Mechanism: Detergents, surfactants, extremes of pH, and organic solvents all have the common effect of directly affecting the barrier properties of the epidermis, while removing the natural skin oil and increasing the trans epidermal water loss.

Treatment: is based on using corticosteroid based creams and avoiding at all cost the agent that initiated the irritation.

Be good and be healthy.

Valentines Day in Brazil is not celebrated in the way as it is celebrated in other parts of the world - In lieu of Valentine's Day, Brazilians celebrate "Dia dos Namorados" or Boyfriend's/Girlfriend's Day on 12th of June - This day is in memory of S. Anthony's day instead of S. Valentim.

No matter the date, it's always nice to have a reason to celebrate friendship and to demonstrate your affection to the loved ones...

Amazon

The etymology of the name Amazon is from the 16th. Century, when the European explorers reached the Americas, they were looking for the Spanish El Dorado "the golden one," name given to a country or city believed to lie in the heart of the Amazon jungle - made with gold, silver and gems.

Portuguese explorers that colonized Brazil were in a race to find the wealth of goods before the Spanish and French.

One version of the history is that the Portuguese in this seek for precious goods have battled against the Tapuyas, a local Indian tribe. The women of the Tapuyas fought alongside the men, as was the custom among the entire tribe - much different from the European culture, where women would take care of the housekeeping only. When these women fought against the European domination, they resembled the Amazon women from the Greek mythology – giving the name Rio de las Amazonas (River of the Amazon women) and to this day, Amazonas.

Next time you are in South America, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this incredible ecosystem.

CARNAVAL is around the corner!

Very soon, officially in February 2nd, all over the world will start celebrating the Carnaval.

It's Summer down the Equator - so it is in Brazil - the country where Carnaval is known as its best. The action has already began in many places throughout the country.
A frequent question is the actual date of the Carnaval. The answer is not simple but such a popular party has its calendar calculated until, who knows, 2050!
Carnaval date
The calculation is based on the Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday - 46 days prior Easter Sunday is the Ash Wednesday and 4 days prior (or 50 days prior Easter) is the beginning of the Carnaval.
In this case, the Carnaval in 2008 happens in Feb 2-5, in 2009 in Feb 21-24, in 2010 Feb 13-16, and in 2011 in Mar 5-8.

Calculation on the side, with so many parties, it's essential to hydrate well and to rest (when you can).

Enjoy it, be good and be healthy!

The owner of this charming spot is Marisa - she is a beautiful blond woman from the Southern of Brazil - looking at her you wonder how mixed Brazilian culture is - she probably is a German or Italian descendant.

I did my hair and spoke with Marisa about cosmetics, treatments and options in the skincare. She specializes in natural treatments and showed me a wide experience with various treatments.

I'll certainly be back!

Moisturizers to Prevent Skin Aging

Moisturizers are complex mixtures of agents developed to make the epidermis (external layers of the skin) more elastic, by increasing its hydration. They can be oil-water or water-oil emulsions.

The way the skin is hydrated is by:
  1. building a film on the skin - locking the water in and to not evaporate or
  2. using low-molecular weight substances avid for water molecules – that absorb the water surrounding the skin and keep it hydrated.

Examples of such substances are naturally occurring skin lipids, natural oils, glycerin, PCA-Na, lanolin, petrolatum, urea, lactic acid, and sorbitol. Many other substances can be added to the basic formula with a positive influence on the skin, such as antioxidants, sunscreens, etc.

The challenge is to hydrate the skin without giving the oily looks and without clogging the pores. There is a formula for each part (face, feet, hands, legs, etc) and case (normal, dry, oily skin) as well a combination of each.

Moisturizers are important to the health of the skin, helping it to keep its elasticity, repairing and protecting from environmental aggressions, and ultimately preventing it from premature aging.

Be healthy and be good.

Mens Sana - New Year's Resolution

Oops - the year is almost over and I haven't determined my New Year's resolution (NYR) yet.

In order to to simplify things, I decided to choose among few things for this upcoming year.

1. Working towards some causes, such as AIDS, vascular diseases, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, work in the community as a volunteer, green, and recycling efforts;

2. Personal achievements, such as making my cosmetics business successful yet ethical, be punctual, go out more often with my husband and friends, be more social, and periodically contact family and friends - even if they live far from me

3. Finally, to practice the idea of Mens sana in corpore sano... "Mens sana in corpore sano " is a famous Latin quotation that translates as "A sound mind in a sound body." This is one of my favorite phrase - and often use it as my motto. In this case, routinelly work-out and as often as possible bring friends along.

I am still in the final process in determining all the NYR - but am really taking it seriously this time - at least we will see in the third Month of the next year... What is your NYR?

Be good and be healthy.

Condition - Doctor's Advice Needed

You have symptoms that make you believe that something is wrong - let's call it a condition. The mosaic of symptoms and its specific treatment work as a puzzle. The Doctor will collect all data and provide his expertise - resolving the puzzle - followed by his/her advice on what treatment course to take - ultimately, you are going to decide what to do next.

Condition Plan of Action:
  1. Keep track of all signs/symptoms - even if you are not sure if it's relevant
  2. Ask what the Doctor says the condition is - write down the name
  3. Ask what the options are for the treatment
  4. Ask how long the treatment usually takes
  5. Ask what the side effects of the therapy are
  6. Ask what can happen if you discontinue the treatment
  7. Ask what is the expected time frame for the healing process - and what is the worst case scenario
Understanding and probing the reasons why your Doctor is choosing a therapy is a good way to face the problem towards a solution. In case you are not comfortable with one Doctor's positioning, get a second opinion - and avoid delaying the treatment. Some conditions should not have the treatment delayed with the risk of worsening it - sometimes with irreversible consequences.
Alternative & Natural ways can be considered, depending on what the condition is - but with a risk to delay the treatment if it's not effective.

A good and positive attitude is proven to help the healing process. Connect, send messages to your family/friends and enjoy the Holiday season.

Be good and be healthy.

Allergy

People has different reactions to some substances, and an adverse reaction can be allergy - such as reaction to polen, insect bites, allergy to some types of food, and cosmetics, etc.

What is allergy
Allergy is a defensive immune response to some substances when the body does not recognize those. The purpose of this reaction is to inactivate this foreign substance and to protect against a potential harm to the body.

Mechanism
Allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction that needs an initial exposure to the substance that causes allergy (allergen). The allergen next stimulates specialized cells (lymphocites) to produce antibody (IgE) that is specific for this allergen. The IgE is released and attached to the surface of another specialized group of cells called mast cells, present in various tissues in the body.

The next time the person is exposed to the allergen, they will specifically attach to the IgE on the surface of the mast cells and prompt these cells to release chemicals, such as histamine. Histamine will cause some of the allergy symptoms - that's why medications for allergy include anti-histamine.

Extreme Allergy cases
Allergic reaction can be life-threatening. Mast cells activation, specially when the allergen is injected - injectable drugs and insects bites - can cause a potentially fatal syndrome called anaphylactic shock. Symptoms include 1. increase in vascular permeability causing a dramatic drop on the blood pressure; 2. airways constrict, causing difficulty in breathing; and 3. swelling of the epiglottis that can cause suffocation in susceptible individuals. The timely injection of epinephrine relaxes the smooth muscle and reverses the scenario.

Anything can be an allergen responsible to trigger allergies – food, cosmetics additives, preservatives, fragrances and other substances. In case of an initial reaction, probe what might have caused the reaction and avoid products that contain such substances.

Happy Holidays and a Healthy 2008!

Wrinkles & Spots - Sun Damaged Skin - Treatment

The Summer strong sun rays is great for a healthy look but even using sunscreen every day, we probably had thickenning and discoloration of the skin. The best time to start a treatment to rewind the damage caused is now during the Winter.

There are several treatments available, some must be prescribed by a Dermatologist, and most treatments are very effective to treat sun damaged skin.

Tretinoin, Retinoic acid, Glycolic acid, microdermabrasion, and other treatments used to exfoliate the skin will exfoliate the damaged layer of cells and expose a new layer of healthy and good looking skin. Most important care is to use those ingredients at night and keep using sunscreen during the day - even if the sun is not visible, its rays can cross clouds and can cause sunburn.
In case irritation occurs, use an OTC corticosteroid on the affected area. If you only need a calming formula, try to use a cold and strong chamomile tea. It works wonders!

Wish all the best for the Holidays and the new year!

Be good and be healthy.

Cosmetics Contamination - Are You at Risk?

Now that the refrigerator is clean and the winter clothes are out of the closet... Let's do the same with our cosmetics.

Most make-up products are in close contact with the skin and are easily contaminated. Think about eye liners, powders, lipsticks, body lotion, conditioners, shampoos, etc. The valid date is often missing and unless you remember exactly when you bought it, it should be disposed.

As it happens with food and medication, cosmetics contain preservatives that are tested to be effective against contamination up to the expiration date. The risks involved in using expired and contaminated cosmetics might have a damaging effect on the skin, such as cosmetic acne.

Cost
Cost most of the time is relative. A good exercise to understand your priorities is to evaluate how often you would use the product and how much it would last. Love the product first, buy it later. Calculate how much it would cost per Month and per day.

Now that your priorities are set, indulge yourself - go to a department store and purchase a good quality make-up set and respective brushes. Switch the old one to a new version - and make sure to dispose your old cosmetics.

Remember: new season, new trends and new colors.

Be good and be healthy.

Getting ready for the Winter

It’s that time of the year – the cold weather is knocking on the door and we have to take our warm clothes from the closet and keep them handy. We also have to be prepared for what the cold season brings: the refreshing cold breeze but also cold/flu.

Cleaning the medicine cabinet works the same way as the refrigerator: anything post-expiration date must be disposed. Such products contain preservatives and are tested to be effective against contamination up to the expiration date – meaning that after this date, there is no guarantee that you don't have micro organism contamination. The result of consuming infected medication is unpredictable – it can go from an allergy to a more serious infection.

If you are not sure about the date, better to not assume that it’s OK. There is a chance to be fine but even with a slight chance of being contaminated it’s not worth the risk to your health. Important to note that contamination is part of the possible problem - the active ingredient can also turn to a non-effective substance.

Enjoy the most elegant season of the year with the best outfit possible – your health.

Be good and be healthy.

Brazilian Amazon

Tropical rain forests are always located near the equator, and are very hot and humid. All this heat associated with great portions of water make a lot of evaporation into the air. The forest helps to retain water in their branches, roots and soil. This is a very special environment, which is responsible for its unique flora and fauna.

Facts about the Amazon rain forest
The Amazon rain forest is the biggest forest in the world and is the last big space covered with tropical plants and animals. Its territory is a tropical rain forest that is located in the north side of the South American continent and is shared by 9 countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, French Guiana and Guiana. The largest part is located in Brazil (60%) and it covers almost half of the country. The space covered with the forest is 3.4 million square miles. The Amazon River consists of connected stretches sufficient to give the gigantic volume of water a continuous impulse towards the ocean.

Origin of the name Amazon
In the 16th. Century, when the European explorers reached the Americas, they were looking for gold, silver and gems. The Portuguese explorers that colonized Brazil were in a race to find the wealth of goods before the Spanish and French.

One version of the history is that the Portuguese in this seek for precious goods have battled against the Tapuyas, a local Indian tribe. Alcohol and Skin Care

Alcohol is back! As your favorite drink - after the Sex and the City's statement electing Cosmopolitan as the drink of choice and many skin care products. Because alcohol dehydrates the skin, it was banned from our cosmetics for a long time - but all evidence points out that alcohol is back! You can see it in acne treatment pads, hand sanitizers, and many other products mostly used to disinfect the skin.

How alcohol dehydrates the skin
Considering the molecular level, the alcohol structure captures water decreasing the water available necessary to keep the skin moist and hydrated.

Alcohol Use
  • Alcohol is used as a solvent in formulas for some active ingredients, such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid - it helps to mix them to the formula if they are first dissolved in alcohol
  • Alcohol was extensively used in the past as a make-up remover for the same reason: as a solvent of make-up ingredients
  • Also used to diminish the water available for nails conditions involving fungus, such as mycosis - since fungus need water to develop
  • Today is extensively used in hand sanitizers for its antiseptic properties
  • Alcohol is an antiseptic, reducing the number of surface skin bacteria without causing bacterial resistance to antibiotics
If the skin dehydrates, we have a dull, hard and unhealthy look that can be prevented by drinking more water and using a good moisturizer to compensate the use of alcohol on the skin.

Be good and be healthy!

Are you a Germ Freak?

When you go to a public bathroom are you a foot-flusher? Do you protect your hands with a paper towel to touch the door nob and use a hand sanitizer after shaking someones hands... Guilty as charge! I imagine the germs attached to it, magnified, greenish... Can't touch it!

Rationally, I understand that the skin promotes an incredible barrier and the problem is to carry the 'dirt' to a part of our body that represents less protection that the skin does, such as the mouth and scared skin. Doctors recommend that we wash our hands to prevent disease spread and to avoid touching the mouth, eyes and mucosa. So... where's the problem?

Germ+Phobia = Germaphobia (germ freak)
Germ = any microscopic organism that can potentially cause disease Phobia = an irrational sort of fear of a specific object, situation, or activity that can cause avoidance.
We see though, various degrees of germaphoby - I am very careful in public places but just a little at home. Germs have always existed and will always be around - let's deal with it rationally!

Bacteria, virus, fungi, prions, parasites - and the list goes on and on... The more information we get, the more paranoid we become and this is not all - the media do their best to reach us. For example, the latest news is the MRSA cases throughout the country with many cases among young athletes. I can picture myself at the gym cleaning the machine I'm using with a towel and a sanitizer and not touching common places with my hands.

The message in this posting is: let's respect our impulses but keep the eye on what makes sense, living a full and whole life.

Beauty tip: the alcohol content in hand sanitizers dehydrate the skin and make its appearance dull and dry. Try to clean your hands and use a good hand cream afterwards to keep your hands looking clean but beautiful!

Be good, be healthy.

Vitamins and Nails Health

Nails health and its appearance cause nails salons to have frequent visitors. Sometimes nail salons practices can be the cause of disseminating infections passed from an infected nail to another, while using not sterilized instruments.

The appearance of the nails might also be compromised if you are not eating balanced meals - it often happens when you change diets. In this case, starting a regimen with vitamins and oligoelements might be beneficial. There are several formulations available that contain vitamin H (biotin) a vitamin used for the health of your nails and hair. There are also other nutrients used, such as vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B12, and oligoelements (zinc, iron, copper, and selenium).

Considerations for the health of your nails:
  • in patients with nails infection for well and not well nourished patient
  • in patients with weak nails for well and not well nourished patient
The evidence suggests:
1) that proper care seems to help maintain nail health
2) some vitamins and oligoelements supplementation (vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin A, zinc, iron, copper, selenium, or vitamin B12) does not seem to be effective for improving the nail health of well-nourished patients or improving the appearance of nails affected by an infection/disease
3) supplementation with vitamin H (biotin) has been used with success for the strenghtening of the nails

In case of an infection, search for Doctor's advice, keep nails dry and use the medication prescribed according to the instructions. Eat right and keep your nails clean, dry and short to maintain its health. It's fun to have nail polish on - try the french manicure/pedicure and follow the colors of the season - I tend to choose the color based on my mood... It works like a charm!

Be healthy and be good!

Vitamin E - Antioxidant action

Vitamin E is also known as tocopherol and it represents a series of compounds and derivatives that are antioxidants. Like the vitamin A, D and K, vitamin E is fat-soluble.

Alpha tocopherol is the main form found in the body and it acts as an antioxidant.

Why are antioxidants so important?
When we talk about antioxidant action, we have to immediately associate to the inactivation of free radicals.

Free radicals are formed in the body during normal metabolism and also upon exposure to environmental factors such as cigarette smoke, stress and pollutants.

Fats, which are part of all cell membranes, are vulnerable to destruction through oxidation by free radicals. Antioxidants react with free radicals and prevent a chain reaction of lipid (fat)destruction. Vitamin E is one of the antioxidants in the body that neutralizes free radicals.

When vitamin E neutralizes a free-radical molecule, it turns into an oxidized form that no longer can act as an antioxidant. Vitamin C is known to turn vitamin E back to its active form, capable to act as an antioxidant.

Sources and RDA
Natural sources of vitamin E include vegetable oils, nuts, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables. The current Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adults is 15mg per day.

The association of vitamins and other elements in our diet will maximize benefits and prevent diseases. Ultimately, beauty is health.

Be good, be healthy!

Vitamin A for your complete health

Funny case happened when I was still a Pharmacy student:
I brought home a gel with high concentrations of Tretinoin for topical use - I've kept it in my mother's refrigerator and have completely forgotten about it.
I suddenly noticed that my mother had the most incredible skin - I kept asking her what she was doing, she replied that it was her "natural beauty." Sure she is a beautiful woman, but I thought that the quality of her skin was just a lot better than usual. Like one of those moments 'I-can-read-your-mind' type, I run to the refrigerator and saw the almost empty experiment. A-ha!!!

Vitamin A is an essential, fat-soluble vitamin related to the health of our vision, skin and bone growth. Its deficiency causes night blindness, corneal drying, among other symptoms.

Vitamin A exists not as a single compound, but in several forms - such as:
1. retinol - an alcohol, the major form of Vitamin A
2. retinal - an aldehyde
3. retinoic acid - an acid
4. pro-vitamin - precursors to the vitamin A, present in plant origin as some of the members of the carotenoid family of compounds.

Vitamin A - Facts
· vitamin A is a fat-soluble compound - for this reason, the body elimination of any excesses taken in through diet is harder than with water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin C.
· Vitamin A's excess causes symptoms, such as nausea, jaundice, irritability, vomiting, blurry vision, headaches, weakness, and altered mentality.
· Vitamin A is a natural antioxidant, protecting cells against the action of the free radicals. Free radicals are reactive by-products of normal cell activity and in excess is related to illnesses as well as the aging process.

Pro-vitamin–A carotenoids - Facts
· Carotene is responsible for the orange colour of the carrots and many other fruits and vegetables.
· Carotene is fat-soluble – fats increase the absorption of the pro-vitamin by the body
· Pro-vitamins from carotenoids will be converted by the human body to retinol, if the body is deficient of Vitamin A.
· Unlike excess vitamin A, carotene in excess is non-toxic. Although its excess is not particularly dangerous, it can lead to a yellowing of the skin – specially the keratin of hands, feet, and eyes. It is most commonly associated with consumption of an abundance of carrots.

Natural Sources
The daily requirement for vitamin A is 900 micrograms for men and 700mcg for women.
Vitamin A is easily found in foods. Some are better sources of vitamin A than others - each portion (1.75-7 oz) contains at least 0.15 mg of Vitamin A or beta carotene: butter, liver, eggs, milk, beef, broccoli, carrot, sweet potatoes, collard greens, beet, pumpkin, spinach, apple, apricots, among other sources.

Vitamin A & Derivatives - Topical use
Vitamin A is an antioxidant that will protect the skin against free radicals and reverse signs of aging by promoting the skin collagen synthesis.
Topical tretinoin / retinoic acid - commonly used in acne treatment, hair loss treatment and to remove wrinkles. It is also used to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Side effects – topical use of Tretinoin/Retinoic acid
· Dryness of the affected skin may occur. More sensitive patients may also experience redness, scaling, itching, and burning.
· Professionals advice use in a gradual increase in the frequency and concentration, as this allows skin to adjust to its use.
· topical use increases the risk of sunburn - you should protect treated skin from exposure to the sun with a high SPF sunscreen.
· Patients who are using the tretinoin/retinoic acid formulas should avoid hair removal waxing - the use of tweezers is a better option for hair removal.
· The recommended time frame to wait for a waxing treatment varies – in general from 7 days to 3 months. Consult with your professional aesthetician and dermatologist to discuss the best hair removal options during or after topical use.

I am a super fan of the Vitamin A, especially for its antioxidant properties. I take supplements that contains vitamin A, C and E, associated with Iron and Zinc and try to follow a healthy diet.

Vitamin C

Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is an essential, water-soluble vitamin. It cannot be synthesized by our bodies and must be ingested regularly.

Vitamin C - Facts

  • is essential for the formation of bone and the tissue that connects other tissues/organs - called connective tissue;
  • is related to the absorption of iron by the body and the healing process;
  • its deficiency causes scurvy;
  • pregnancy, breastfeeding, surgery, smoking increase the body's requirements for vitamin C and represents the risk for a deficiency
  • is known as a potent antioxidant - It prevents the oxidation of other compounds by being oxidized instead.

Vitamin C is used as an natural antioxidant, protecting cells against the action of the free radicals. Free radicals are reactive by-products of normal cell activity and in excess is related to illnesses as well as the aging process.

Natural Sources
The daily requirement for vitamin C is not much - just 60 mg - and its excess is eliminated by the body. Some fruits and vegetables are better sources of vitamin C than others. Known rich in Vitamin C are: acerola, rose hips, açaí, orange.

Topical Use
Vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant that will protect the skin against free radicals and reverse signs of aging by promoting the skin collagen synthesis. It is very unstable once exposed to the air and it needs special care once use in formulations, such as having a very low pH and the association with other antioxidants. For these reasons, its formulations might not be suitable for sensitive skin.

Vitamin C Derivatives - Topical use
While the acidic form of Vitamin C formulations might not be be suitable for sensitive skin, Vitamin C Derivatives might have the same skin benefits of ascorbic acid without the downside. Ascorbyl palmitate and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate are among the most used vitamin C derivatives in skin care. They are non-irritating and more stable than vitamin C. Unfortunately, it appears that in the concentration used in topical formulations, they do not promote collagen synthesis as much as vitamin C in the acidic form.

I am a super fan of the Vitamin C. I drink natural juices, take 100mg daily and use skin formulations with the original Vitamin C. I complement it with vitamin A, vitamin E - inside and out - and do microdermabrasion to make sure that I'm equally exfoliating the dead skin and showing the new healthy skin layer.

Be good and be healthy!

Vitamin K - Bruises and Dark Eye Circle

In the next posting, we will talk about vitamins, their importance for our health and benefits in formulations to be used on the skin.

Since our last posting we talked about Dark Eyes Circle - in this posting, we will talk more about Vitamin K, natural sources and indications.

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin, related to blood clotting. The “K” comes from the German word “koagulation” and is essential for the blood clotting process.

There are 2 natural forms of Vitamin K: phylloquinone and Vitamin K2. Phylloquinone is the primary form of vitamin K in the diet found mostly in green leafy vegetables.

Researchs indicate that its deficiency can cause easy bruising and other conditions, including osteoporosis.
Facts about bruises
  • Purpura is the medical term for bleeding that occurs beneath the surface of the skin and 'bruise' is a minor bleeding underneath the skin, usually caused by an injury.
  • Bruises are formed from clotted blood underneath the surface of the skin. The trapped blood is eventually broken down and reabsorbed by the body.
  • Simple bruises from slight trauma can be easily treated with ice, since it constricts broken blood vessels and lessens leakage under the skin. You might still have a bruise, but will be smaller and less painful.
  • Spontaneous bruising may occur or a bruise may appear with minimal injury in patients with family bleeding disorders. If you have unusual bruising, inform your doctor.
Natural Sources of Vitamin K
Phylloquinone is the major dietary form of Vitamin K, present in green leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, leaf lettuce, swiss chard, cooked broccoli - also in soybean, cottonseed, canola and olive oils, mayonese, hemp seeds, liver and other sources.

Vitamin K topical use
Topical formulations with 5% of Vitamin K are used to decrease the appearance of bruises, dark eye circles and rosacea.
Consult your doctor prior using a formulation that contains vitamin K (topically or orally).

Be good and be healthy.

Dark eyes circle

The darkening of the area around the eyes makes you look tired, older and unhealthy. Genetics, age, life style, such as smoke, and lack of sleep can contribute to make it worse.

There are many possible factors to cause dark eye circle – ultimately, they are caused by broken capillaries and possibly thinning of the skin. Also, the more dilated the vessels in the eye area, the more it shows.

Like it happens with bruises and varicose veins, when the blood circulation is compromised, the absence of oxygen in the blood causes the oxidation of hemoglobin, changing from red to yellow and finally blue. If it happens inside the capillary matrix of the eye area, you have the appearance of dark eye circle.

Possible Treatments and Cover-up
Considering the skin in the eye area is very thin and sensitive, investing in a good product to use in the eye area is essential. Products include make-up, eye cream, and make-up remover.

Make-up: concealer and shimmering make-up cover the appearance of uneven skin coloration, masking the darkness in the under eye area. Test them in the store prior choosing the best color. Try a color slightly lighter than your foundation or skin color.

Eye Cream: in general contains a combination of active ingredients that will help the circulation in the eye area, moisturizers to improve the appearance of the skin, and agents that cover-up the darkness (make-up effect).

Active Ingredients to consider
Vitamin K - it’s a natural coagulant and it acts in the blood in the micro-vessels. Results are visible in minutes!

Guaraná extract - contains caffeine and it helps to constrict the capillaries in the eye area, diminishing the appearance of dark eye circle.

Other natural extracts, such as Indian chestnut and Ginkgo biloba might improve the micro circulation by strengthening the function of the micro-vessels.

Antioxidants and Moisturizers - will improve the overall appearance of the skin.

Also use make-up remover. It should be alcohol-free to avoid dehydration. If you run out of your make-up remover, use olive oil rather than using soap.

Final thoughts
The skin around the eye is one of the most sensitive areas on the body. It’s important to invest in a good eye cream and to apply products for the eye area, such as creams, make-up and make-up remover using the fingertips in a gentle way.

Be good and be healthy.

Organic or not organic: this is not the only question

Organic food began as a small movement with farmers rejecting the use of conventional farming practices. They are environmentally and politically correct, they taste better and have more nutrients - they are better for you. The term Organic reached our produce at the supermarket and menu at the restaurant and now we see it in our cosmetics and in the natural material for our clothes.

Whatever the meaning is, the term has a connotation that if it’s organic, it’s good. It might cost a little more, but the results are beyond the fact that you have a great tasting tomato.

Term
Organic in reference of food and agriculture, is a farming system that does not use pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and vaccines among other criteria. Pesticides are chemicals used to control pests, such as insects, weeds, birds, mammals, fungi, etc. They are usually, but not always, poisons.

Organic food is not irradiated, does not contain additives and cannot be genetically modified. It reinforces the integration of a profitable farming while supporting sustainable development harvesting.

Cost
Organic products typically cost more than similar conventionally produced products and might not be affordable to persons on a lower income. Many big companies are changing conventional methods of farming to organic standards and what originally had small farms and smaller scale. Prices may be higher because organic produce involves extra labor and is produced on a smaller scale.

Identifying organic products
The "certified organic" label is usually the only way we know that the product is "organic".
The NOP - National Organic Program (run by the USDA) is responsible for the legal definition of organic in the United States and organic certification.
The USDA Organic Seal is given to products that were grown/manufactured/handled in a manner that adheres to standards set by the NOP standards with at least 95% organic ingredients.

Organic and cosmetics
In October 21, 2003 organic standards in the US were only for Agriculture/Food Organics.

In August 2005 NOP's memo - to “clarify NOP’s position” on products that meet NOP's program standards for organic products based on content, independent of the end use of the product. The label was than extended to all “consumable” products that contain certified ingredients and wish to make the organic label claim. Private and voluntary International associations provide such certification for organic cosmetics, each with its own standards and certifications.

US Organic cosmetics content percentages and labeling requirements
Case 1: 100% certified Organic ingredients - can use the USDA seal. Important, water cannot be counted as an organic ingredient but if present, it has to be declared.
Case 2: 95% certified Organic + 5% allowed non organic ingredients - can use the USDA seal
Case 3: 70% certified Organic + 30% allowed non organic ingredients – cannot use the USDA seal

Keep in the perspective
There are many reasons why we should use organic products – it’s not only good for you but it’s great for the environment.

Be good and be healthy.

Cellulite - Part IV - Final

The skin is an ever-changing organ that contains live structures and it need constant maintainance. Whatever you do today to improve the skin has to be done tomorrow to keep its health.

Cellulite possible causes
  • Gender & Genetics
  • Life style
Gender and Genetics
Estrogen and other female hormones play an important role in the deposit and distribution of the body fat.

We also know that cellulite happens almost exclusively in women, appointing female hormones as a very important factor in its development.

More factors
If your mother has cellulite, you most probably will have it. Also, women with big hips tend to have more tendencies to develop cellulite.

Still related to the hereditary factor, body fluids circulation plays a very important role – the importance of circulation is related to the cell nutrition and elimination of toxins. Women with varicose veins and spider veins tend to have poor circulation, thus more tendencies to cellulite.

Life style Stress, alcoholic beverages in excess, tobacco, processed food, excessive fat, sugar and salt consumption are closely related to the development of circulatory problems and cellulite.

Prevention and Treatment
Good habits go a long way to prevent or minimize cellulite and many other conditions.

Avoid the use of tight clothes and high heeled shoes to aid in keeping a good circulation.
Chill out: Minimize excessive stress by balancing life and work.
Good night sleep: Another good way to keep stress level down is to create a good environment prior going to sleep – by avoiding stimulants, such as caffeine intake at night.

Excesses: If you cannot stop completely, at least avoid excesses of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, processed food, excessive fat, sugar and salt consumption.

Work out: exercises that include muscle building and aerobic activities tend to have a positive result in the unaesthetic appearance of cellulite ‘orange peel’.

Massage: localized to promote fluid circulation in the affected areas to increase the elimination of toxins. One of the most popular massage for this purpose is the Lymphatic drainage, which will promote better circulation of the fluids in the lymphatic vessels.

Products: include active ingredients that act on the micro circulation and fatty cells. They are more effective if applied with massage for better absorption and improved local circulation.

Pharmacological agents:
1. Aminophylline, theophylline and caffeine belong to a chemical group known as methylxanthines. This group of substances can help the lypolysis (fat breakdown) – therefore they are present in many anti-cellulite products.
2. Pentoxifylline, which improves micro-circulation
3. Isoproterenol and adrenaline; yohimbine, piperoxan, phentolamine and dihydrohergotamine
4. Coenzyme A and L-carnitine (methylxantine enhancers)
5. Asiaticoside (present in the Asiatic centella) and Sillicium derivatives (micro vessels protection) 6. Rutin (present in the Indian chestnut) and Ginkgo biloba (action on micro circulation)

The challenge with any topical active ingredient is to have enough absorption in the site of action - in this case, the subcutaneous tissue.

Special products that target cellulite can be used topically, systemically, or transdermally. The appearance of ‘orange peel’ will most likely return when the treatment is ceased.

Chill out and combine methods for an overall response and a healthier life. Results can be seen in the very first Month and lasting results depend on frequency and discipline.

Be good and be healthy!

Cellulite - Part III

Anatomy of the Skin
The skin is the largest organ in the body. It is an ever-changing and complex organ that contains many specialized cells and structures each with a well determined function.

The main function of the skin is protection from the environment, and is also involved in maintaining the proper temperature for the body.

The skin is composed by 3 layers: epidermis, dermis and the subcutaneous tissue, this last being the main focus on the discussion about cellulite.

Epidermis
Epidermis is the outermost layer of skin.

Dermis
Dermis is the next layer under the epidermis, which contains many specialized cells and structures, such as hair follicles, sebaceous (oil) glands, eccrine (sweat) glands, blood vessels, connective tissue, and nerves receptors and specialized nerve cells, responsible to transmit sensations, such as pain, temperature, touch, pressure.

The connective tissue provides the framework and insulation of the dermis layer. It offers a necessary insulation and stability between the various structures, permitting their proficient function.

It is composed primarily of collagen providing the tensile strength, ground substance, and elastic tissue, which as the name suggests, gives the skin its elasticity.

Subcutaneous tissue
The next layer of tissue is the subcutaneous tissue. This is a layer of fat and connective tissue that contains larger blood vessels and nerves.

This layer is important for the regulation of temperature of the skin and the body. The size of this layer varies throughout the body part, based on gender and genetics of each person.

The subcutaneous tissue contains “fat-cell chambers” separated by connective tissue. From these fat-cell chambers, small projections of fat cells reach the dermis. This unevenness and irregularity of the subcutaneous fat gives the skin the "orange peel" appearance of cellulite.

In the next postings we will be discussing about the possible causes of cellulite and treatments.

Meanwhile, be healthy and be good!

Cellulite - Part II

The cause of cellulite is more complex than saying that the orange peel skin is caused by an extra fat underneath the skin.

Cellulite is a unique and distinctive layer of subcutaneous body fat related to the fluid circulation between cells and vessels.

It is particularly common to females due to various factors, including hormones, family history, and age. Typically, women that have less body fat seem to have less cellulite.

Turning orange into peach peel

Incorporating a diet with less calories and salt, associated with aerobic exercise and sessions of lymphatic drainage and massage with products specific for cellulite tend to bring positive results.

Lasting results depend on discipline and keeping good habits.

Be healthy and be good.

Bath - a Healing Experience

Bathing is a popular activity enjoyed by people around the world. Various types of baths provide many benefits, such as relaxation, healing, purification of the body and soul.

History shows that the art of bathing is a science practiced by the Romans, the Greeks, the Egyptians and other ancient civilizations. Its indications went beyond the cleansing activity and it was also used for therapeutic purposes.

The Roman Bath was the most popular social activity for the ancient Romans. As an example, the essential oil of lavender (from the Latim word “lavare”, to wash), was used by the Romans that time. Lavender is known for its many uses as a therapeutic product, indicated for insomnia, relaxation, depression, as a pain killer, among other uses. Other ingredients, such as rose, ginger, olive oil, lemon were used and because of their properties, they remain popular even today.

Plan a weekend to go to a spa or bring the pampering and soothing feeling of a bath at home by adding some ingredients to the bath water. The market offers a number of options so you can have your own traditional bath. Bath salts, fizzy or not, with essential oils, bubble bath, among others. Twenty minutes should be the time you allocate for home baths and the water temperature should not be too hot.

You can fancy it up by arranging some candles and soft music, throwing some rose petals and use a nice body scrub with essential oils to exfoliate your skin and to make it glow.

Enjoy!

Sustainable Development and Beauty

The rain forest produces a wealth of renewable and sustainable resources, such as unique medicinal plants, nuts, fruits, oils, natural fibers, rubber, chocolate, among others. The Healing Power of Rain forest plants are for long used by the native Indians - scientists and researchers have just begun to uncover the medicinal properties of the rain forest flora.

Industries try to understand the productive process, such as researching, and studying new natural ingredients from the flora of the rain forest that may be explored in a sustainable manner, generating unique material. Inside this cycle, together with the conservation of the environment, the fauna rises as an important factor, promoting the dissemination and the productivity of most flora species – it’s a “win-win” situation.

Above all, the biodiversity has its intrinsic function of stability of the ecosystems, also owning the ecological, social, cultural, economical, and scientific values.

Supporting Sustainable Development Programs
Industries, including cosmetics have the opportunity to identify farms, which have a potential sustainable supply of the desired raw material as the first step to support such programs. Sustainable use of the biodiversity programs educate local producers, establishing a sustainable extraction. The result is the socio-economic inclusion of many families, supporting projects for the conservation of the local biodiversity, and the exercise of citizenship.

Time for Hope
We acknowledge the destruction that still happens in rain forests around the planet – our hope is in effectively providing environmentally safe and economically viable alternatives to the destructive activity.

Sustainable harvesting of rain forest plants is environmentally sound and makes more economic sense. It provides real and viable alternative methods to utilize their resources in sustainable programs, which will enable them to protect their resources for future generations.

Finally, supporting sustainable development programs... it's a beautiful thing.

Hair - Part II

Hair Loss and Health
Hair loss can start at any time and can happen to anyone. It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of the normal cycle of hair growth. However, some people may experience excessive (more than normal) hair loss. Besides the fact that it represents a cosmetic issue, it might also be a health issue, since increased hair loss can be related to an illness.

Logistics – Numbers for Normal Cycle of hair growth
2 to 6: number of years for normal cycle of hair growth
1: number of centimeters each hair grows per month during the hair growth cycle
90: percentage of the hair growing at any one time on the scalp
10: percentage of hair that it is a resting phase at any one time
2 to 3: number of months after the resting phase that the hair falls out
0: starting point after the hair falls out and a new hair starts to grow in its place

Hair loss - Possible causes
Male standard alopecia: is the most common cause of hair loss affecting men after the puberty, since androgen hormones concentration is higher. Although alopecia is more common in men, it can also affect women and children.

Possible causes are as follows: genetics, aging, burns, lesions, poor diet, radiotherapy, conditions involving high fever, some infections, systemic illnesses, such as Lupus and Diabetes, use of some medications, such as Cancer medications, Vitamin A and derivatives, etc.

More causes - improper hair care
Hair style / improper hair care: tight hair rollers, waves - the pull on hair can cause hair loss. If the pulling is stopped before scarring of the scalp develops, the hair will grow back normally.

Chemical burns: perms and straightening may cause chemical burn and inflammation of the hair follicle, which can result in hair loss and even scarring of the scalp.

Hair loss can start at any time and happen to anyone. Talk to a professional and inform your family history, if you are taking medications, including vitamins, if you have any thyroid problems, and your daily diet. For women, also inform your menstrual cycle, use of birth control pills and if you are pregnant. The Doctor will probably take a biopsy and request a blood test to determine possible causes.

Treatments - reality check
There are many treatments available, depending on the cause of the hair loss. The success of the treatment will depend on the diagnosis in an early stage and in many cases, how consistent you use the medication. If it works, it might take about six months to see results. Depending on the cause, there is no cure and the hair loss will happen once you discontinue the treatment.

Treatment - options
1. Hair transplant - suitable for men or women, where the hair follicles are transferred from one part of the body to another
2. Oral medication, such as Finasteride, the generic name for the brand name Propecia – prescription only
3. Minoxidil (topical use) – in few cases Minoxidil shows to be effective to promote hair growth
4. Topical treatment (lotion or shampoo), such as capsaicin, peppermint, Jaborandi inducing hair growth by causing a local and small irritation
5. anti fungal medicines to treat the fungal infection that is causing the hair loss
6. Other treatments involve the use of corticosteroids, for hair loss related to the immune system.

Another cosmetic option is to try different hairstyles, use hairpieces, wigs or even make-up to cover-up the lack of hair in the area.

Check what is suitable for your condition and seek treatment as soon as possible, at least to clear the health issue. Finally, remember that what is inside is more important than what is outside.

Hair - Part I

Oily hair

Oily hair has a damaging effect on a good appearance rule: it looks dull, flat and it also smells. Without engaging in too many details, we can address the problem and possible solutions.

Facts
-Oil or sebum is produced by a couple of glands, the sebaceous glands, located at the base of each hair.
-More hair, more glands, and more oil production.
-The oil production is genetic - if you mother or father has oily hair, you most probably will have it.
-Heat and humidity make you sweat and carry the oil along the hair more easily. With that in mind, it’s easy to understand how hair seems to be oilier in the summer.
-Hormones can affect the oil production by activating the sebaceous glands. Anything that affect hormones levels may also affect the production of oil, such as stress, use of birth control pills, and pregnancy.
-Touching and brushing the hair will carry the oil along the hair length, from the scalp to the ends.
-The texture of the hair also helps to show the oil – the finer the hair, the easier to have the oil distributed to the hair’s extension, and the appearance of oily hair is more visible.

Final thoughts
The sebaceous glands produce oil all the time; if you want to get rid of the oil, shampoo/wash your hair.

Choosing a Shampoo
The simpler the better – clear shampoos just clean the hair and tend to have less ingredients that will build-up. Also, specialists advice to change the brand of the shampoo periodically to avoid build-up.

Shampooing Tips
-Mix a little water with the shampoo on your hands to facilitate the shampooing
-Apply on hair and scalp for few minutes
-Repeat the process washing the hair 2-3 times and rinse it all off, prior applying the conditioner. The use of a hair conditioner is optional, since the oil would act preventing the hair static. Suggestion: try to apply the conditioner only on the hair ends. Conditioner and products that contain silicons are so closely attached to the hair that washing the hair more times might be necessary to get rid of the build-up.
- A good home-made recipe for making oily hair shinny is rinsing it at the very end with 1 teaspoon lemon concentrate or vinegar diluted in 2 cups of water. Use when possible mineral-free water, since minerals can promote build-up.
-Massaging the scalp should be done only during shower, gently, with the fingertips. It is recommended to increase circulation and to promote blood flow in the scalp.

A great hair cut will get rid of the damaged hair and would help to keep the body up and make your hair look healthy.

Trust a good professional to help you to find a new hair style for a change.

Beauty tips for travellers

We work hard all year long - with all the planning for your well deserved trip, there is one detail to remember: the airplane trip!

Respecting the volume allowed for your carry-on is not easy, but we do our best... A good idea is to go to the travel supplies at the drugstore and buy those small containers of your favorite products or even the actual container to fill them out at home.

Carry-on must have:
  • hand sanitizer
  • moisturizer
  • lip gloss, lipstick or chap stick
  • skin toner
  • ear plugs and mask
  • Mouth wash, tooth brush, tooth paste and floss
  • Gum
  • Hair gel
  • Deodorant
  • Perfume

More tips:
Hydration: it improves the body fluids circulation. It's good for the body, it's great for the skin! Have orange juice, cranberry juice, apple juice, water and other drinks with little or no sugar and caffeine-free. Alcohol, sugar and caffeine dehydrate the body.
Exercise: Walk around, stretch while on your chair - it's very important for your circulation and helps to prevent or minimize swelling.
Moisturizer: Many times, depending how long the flight takes, the skin gets too dry. Clean your hands with a hand sanitizer and apply a good moisturizer. Avoid touching the face if the hand is not clean - in an airplane it's rather hard to desinfect your hands, touching your face can bring dirt from the environment to your skin and might promote the development of pimples.
Rest: Wear ear plugs and mask - it helps you to rest and feel a little more refreshed.

Final touch: make sure you have your deodorant on, apply a little gel on your hair, perfum, lipstick, sunglasses for the final effect and...

... look fabulous when leaving the airplane!
